We live four hours from Washington DC. We have friends who live in the area. David goes to DC several times each year for conferences and meetings, one of which happened to be the same week that Sarah had Winter Break involving an entire week out of school in the middle of the winter (because apparently 3 snow days and 3 late start days weren't enough of a break). So it was easy to jump in the car on Monday and drive down for a free vacation. Because we can. It was all my idea, and I'm pretty sure David wasn't too keen on it initially. But he relented, because he knew I just might lose my mind cooped up indoors with both children by myself with no relief for 24 hours a day for four days straight. When it comes right down to it, a free vacation is a no brainer. Free hotel, mileage and tolls reimbursed, meals (for him at least) reimbursed, free museums, and a stipend for his attendance at the meetings. I'm pretty sure we made money on this vacation. February may not be the best time to visit our nation's capital, but we still had an enjoyable time. The kids and I enjoyed meeting up with an old friend of mine. The kids got along famously, and I always enjoy catching up with old friends. I channeled my inner city driving skillz and drove from Maryland to Virginia on more interstates than I could keep track of. Thank goodness for the GPS. We also made a quick visit to the Washington DC temple which is a remarkable building. The kids enjoyed splashing in the puddles and stomping in the snow on the grounds. I was mostly in awe of their sprawling parking lot. The hotel was divine. What's not to love about having someone else make your bed every morning, not having to clean the bathroom, and complimentary breakfasts? That's enough to make this girl happy. And everyone knows kids plus hotels equals love. It's like one big long adventure with an elevator and hallways to run up and down. Plus, we stopped at the grocery store for donuts every day. The kids now think Washington DC is the greatest place ever. We had a lovely short getaway, and the best news is there's another meeting in October. I could probably get used to these semiannual vacations to Washington. There's always another free hotel to enjoy and a free museum to attend.

Glad you did it and came by. It was fun to see you, I am just sorry my life was so crazy and we had to run so quick. If you come back in the fall, let me know in advance, we can plan an outing or dinner for a night when we will actually clear our schedules! Maybe someday we will even make it up to NY.
Funny how things work, a few days after I saw you Erika Kellersburger found me on FB and sent a long note my way. I have lost way too much contact with old friends over the years, but it got me to thinking... 15 years since we finished high school (I really can't believe that) and we really ought to all get together again sometime. Maybe in the summer in UT? Just a thought...
