this, apparently, is the place

The day after we arrived in Utah for our annual visit we were whisked off by family to This Is The Place Heritage Park where the pioneers initially traveled into the Salt Lake Valley. I think it may have been a not-so-subtle message meant just for us. Despite seeing the farm animals here, Zach continues to call horses cows. City boy! Sarah tried her hand at both pulling a handcart and performing some pioneer sewing/weaving/crafts. The kids were also able to ride a mini train and try their hand at leather working. I think that Sarah will not be pursuing a career in leather making as she found it extremely frustrating and unsatisfying. She loved panning for gold, however, and found enough pyrite that I was able to declare us rich. Zach mostly enjoyed throwing rocks into the river amongst the explorers. They also made arrowhead necklaces which were a big hit with Sarah until later in the afternoon when a goat in the petting zoo attempted to eat hers and wouldn't let go of it. She is now terrified of goats. Of course, a trip to an attraction such as this wouldn't be complete without a pony ride. We learned about the Deseret Alphabet and attempted to write our names. Hands down the best part of the day was the snow cone and the ice cream cone and a stop at the chore house to do a bit of laundry and walk on the stilts.
