all hands on deck

We visited the USS Intrepid at Pier 86 on the Hudson River today. This aircraft carrier served during World War II, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and also helped to rescue rocket-type things that fell into the ocean after orbiting in space. John McCain served on this aircraft carrier. I could not believe how enormous it was--nearly as tall as the Chrysler building. Of course, when I thought of F-16s and other aircraft taking off from it and landing on it, it didn't seem possible. I was worried that Sarah would be bored while we toured the boat, but she seemed to enjoy it as much as the rest of us. She saw the anchor room with chains bigger around than she is. She enjoyed shooting the anti-aircraft guns, steering the ship, pushing every button she could find, shouting, "This is the Captain speaking," and "All hands on deck," into the intercoms, opening the hatch, and manning an ambulance helicopter. Who wouldn't love doing all those things? Although it was freezing, I really enjoyed the flight deck. We all loved seeing the inner workings of the ship--especially where all the action takes place in the navigation room, map room, and radio room.

Seeing this great ship brings tears to my eyes knowing the men that fought for our freedom. What an experience for us to be able to touch, imagine and feel what it was like so many years ago. Thank you, veterans.

I wish we could have seen this when we visited, but of course it wasn't open at that time due to the fixing up/work they were doing on it. Looks like it was worth the wait! It's definitely on my list of things to see if we ever get to NYC again.
