Sarah received a little journal as a gift a while back, and I held on to it waiting for her writing skills to improve just a bit. My favorite thing about this particular journal is that is gives sentence starters that make it easier to prompt writing rather than a blank page. Now that she is more confident with her spelling skills (able to write the words independently and not asking for letter by letter spellings of each word) and more likely to write in sentences, I unearthed it and left it out for her. She honed in on it within minutes of returning home from school and set to work. She has spent several afternoons working in it, and I have loved to read her little six-year-old responses. I'm planning to encourage her to complete the journal and then start over again to see how she changes over time and how her responses evolve and get longer as she gets older. Here is a sampling of her thoughts and feelings:
- Everyone has a favorite place. Where is yours? What is it like? What do you like to do there?
- My favorite place is Utah. It is like fun. I like to go to Lagoon.
- Do you have a hobby? What is it?
- My hobbyies are tic-tac-toe, math, reading, drawing, writing coloring.
- Describe your favorite day of school this year.
- Fall fun day
- What makes you happy?
- Geting things I want
- Name something you have done that makes you proud.
- Being good
- When you call a friend on the phone, what do you talk about?
- If he-she can come over
- If you could spend an afternoon with someone you look up to, who would it be? What would you do?
- Q'Andre, Lena, Patrice, Tatina. Talk.
- What is your favorite subject in school? Why? What is your least favorite subject? Why?
- Music. It is fun. Writeing Workshop. It's not so fun.
- If you are stuck on a problem with your homework, who helps you? Why do you go to this person?
- Mom. I like her.
- What is your favorite holiday? How do you celebrate it?
- My favorit holidays are Valintine's day, Crismas, Easter.
- Write about a few of your favorite books. Why do you find them interesting?
- Ivy + Bean. It's funny. The Penderwick's. It is interesting.

That's awesome! I love journal keeping and can't wait to see what Bianca writes in hers. At least until she gets into the Twilight series, then I'm sure I won't want to know. JK.
