taking a break

In general, Sarah has matured past the dress-up stage which is bittersweet. Some days I miss her traipsing around the house in her plastic high heels and fancy frocks, but most days I am grateful that when it's time to leave the house she is wearing real clothes rather than princess get-ups. And I will never miss having to pick up those piles and piles of dress-up clothes five or so times every day. On occasion, however, the dress-up chest makes a reappearance when friends come over, and somehow they squeeze into those size four and five gowns or simply use the accessories to transform into princesses, queens, and fairy godmothers once again. Today, they somehow convinced Zach to take part in their fairy tale adventures. I'm certain it must have involved all four girls holding him down and forcing him into the only boy dress-up clothes that we own including a pirate costume size 6-12 months that he wore when he was one. After about 30 minutes of playing along in the escapades with the girls, he escaped their gloved and jeweled clutches to engage in something a little more manly--riding his scooter. He told me he needed to take a break. About ten scoots around the driveway later, he realized he was still dressed as a pirate/train engineer and quickly made short work of his costume. When I went to tell the girls that their pirate had sailed away on his scooter into the dangerous sea known as the driveway, they weren't sure what pirate I was talking about but asked me whether I had seen their king/gardener. They weren't terribly upset when I told them that he had decided to abdicate his throne.
