enjoying new england

We headed up to Boston this past weekend for a quick trip to visit with some friends. We headed up early Saturday morning and came back Sunday night. The kids had a grand time. The leaves were lovely. The air was cool. We attended the Topsfield Fair which is the oldest fair in the country. Of course, we had to ride the rides and an elephant. We had to eat fried dough. We had to participate in some of those ridiculously expensive carnival games. Sarah won a stuffed dolphin which she has scarcely let out of her sight since. We saw the winning pumpking--all 1,464 pounds of her. We reminisced about the summer we grew a giant pumpkin. Although we never weighed it, we were both required (plus a wheelbarrow) to move it. We ate hot dogs and drank soda. We devoured cotton candy. You have to if you're at the fair. We also visited a nature preserve where we saw some Canadian geese migrating. We threw rocks in the river. We enjoyed a lovely marionette puppet show. Sarah liked the show but not so much the puppets who wanted to be her friend. Fortunately for us, all this Boston-bound fun is only 3 to 3 1/2 hours away, so we can go again soon!

Zach looks giant. Is he as big as the redheaded boy Calvin. Sometimes Laura and I look at their blog because we really like his stories - especially when he threw the carrot at the horse.
