We had ward conference today. It went really well until the fire alarm was accidentally pulled during the rest hymn. I was in the foyer with a restless Zach (He was not the culprit) and saw it happen. It seemed like everything went in slow motion as we tried to stop it to no avail. Key priesthood holders jumped up and ran from the chapel some already on their cell phones calling the fire department to let them know it was not an emergency. On their way into the foyer I informed them of what had happened. Then from the back of the chapel I tried to mouth to David on the stand what had happened. Some ward members jumped from their chairs and raced out. Others stayed seated unsure of what to do. Finally, it was decided that we would evacuate the building due to the noise created by the alarm. We went outside and enjoyed the sunshine and 70 degree weather. Two fire trucks screamed up to the church while we milled around the parking lot. The firemen jumped out in their fire gear to go inside and shut the alarm off. We made it back inside just in time to sing the closing song and have a closing prayer. Poor Sarah was in the chapel sitting in a row all by herself. It probably scared her to death. She came running out into the foyer and had left her shoes in by her seat. (For some bizarre reason, she always takes her shoes off during sacrament meeting.) Fortunately, our favorite neighbor, J, was there to help locate her shoes and help me keep track of the both of them while we were outside. Zach was just excited to see the fire trucks and have an excuse to drive his cars out on the real road (parking lot). I have to admit that it was the best ward conference I've ever attended.
