I would say that Sarah is introduced to more cultural things than the average four year old. Most of this is due to her father who has been instrumental in piquing her interest in Greek mythology and Mozart's Magic Flute among other things. These are two things she is fascinated with and simply can't get enough of. He has also taken her to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I generally introduce her to more simplistic things although I will take the credit for introducing her to the story of Peter and the Wolf (the Sesame Street version, anyway). About two months ago I took Sarah to the Museum of Modern Art with some friends. While there we saw a number of things including several paintings by Picasso and Van Gogh. As we were wandering through the museum, I pointed out some famous paintings and made her say the names of several famous artists whose work we were viewing. One of these paintings and artists was "Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. People were actually looking at us a little oddly as I was making my four year old repeat the names of the artists until she said them properly. I'm often amazed at how much she retains. It certainly paid off this week when she was watching Baby Einstein Baby Van Gogh this week with Zach as I did some packing. They showed a picture of Van Gogh's "Starry Night," and I was thrilled when Sarah said, "Hey mom, we've seen that painting!" What a cultured kid!
