use it or move it
This is the current policy around here. Although we haven't built up a year supply or anything near it, there are many things that it is nice to buy in bulk and just have on hand. Until you have to move. Then the goal is to eat up everything in the place so you don't have to move it or pay to have it moved. So, we are eat, eat, eating everything up that we can. It's harder than it might seem. The goal is to eat as much stored stuff as we can without buying much more, if any, other than the basics such as milk, eggs, cheese, and bread. It's more difficult than you might imagine. I'm finding that a bag of chicken nuggets from Costco can last forever! A whole case of tomato sauce? Six cans of kidney beans? What was I thinking? Those must have been purchased in the first few months of our NYC life when I felt like I was rationing food and must buy more, more, more! There's a fine line between using it up and running out too soon, also. As it turns out, we want to time it to run out of ketchup on Friday (day before move), not today when we would just have to open another ketchup to eat the rest of those darn chicken nuggets! Just when I thought things were going well on the disposal of all food things stored, kitchen items began disappearing away into moving boxes. Bye bye, microwave! See ya later, blender! Then the toaster broke. Things are getting even more tricky around here. We may have to bag the eating of all things in storage and revert to take-out! Chinese, anyone? I'll take a large pepperoni pizza to go!

Grandpa's got a mighty fine old toaster that he's not using any more. He could probably mail it right out ; ).
