sarah & the subway

Sarah loves loves loves the subway. She calls it the sumbway. (We are working on the correct pronunciation.) Every time we ride on it she gets so excited. She also gets very upset if it isn't running due to repairs or if we decide to take the bus instead. She always wants to know if we're going uptown or downtown. (When she gets in bed, she says she is going uptown if she puts her head on the pillow and downtown if she puts her head at the foot of the bed.) She really likes to stand up and hold on to the poles or bars. She is only allowed to do this when the train is nearly empty and we are near home. Whenever we get on the subway, she wants to sit on the orange seats. She gets very concerned if there are not enough seats for us to sit together and also dislikes sitting next to strangers. On one occasion, David ended up sitting on the opposite side of the train with people standing between us so she couldn't see him. She was very upset about this. She is awesome at spotting subway stations all over the city and will shout out what trains go through that station. Eric and Laura were quite impressed with her letter and number naming abilities as she would point out the A train, the F train, the 1 train, the B train, the 2 train, etc. She knew them all. Her favorite is the A train which is right by our house. As we're riding the train, she calls out the numbers for each stop. Of course, instead of saying 125th street, she would say one-two-five street. She proudly tells people that we live at one-eight-one street. Now, instead of hearing "Are we there yet?" twenty-five times, I get to listen to twenty-five "Is this our stops?"! Lucky me!

That girl is a subway superstar. She could probably figure out how to ride it by herself.
