I'm looking into free options for preschool for Sarah for next year, but we moved here a little late this year to get her into preschool for this year. Plus, preschool can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 here, and I am saving for her to go to college, not to preschool. So, she does Book Buddies once a week, and I'm working on this "letter of the week" idea that a friend mentioned to me several months ago. Basically, each week you pick a different letter to focus on and then do activities related to that letter. The child needs to be occupied or she gets into trouble. We started off this week with the letter A. Here are some of the things we have been/will be doing. Let me know if you have any other A ideas for us!
- apples-tasting several varieties and picking our favorite; dipping slices in different things like peanut butter, caramel, cream cheese, etc.; making an apple turkey; apple stamping a placemat; finger painting an apple tree; making applesauce; apple pancakes; apple crisp; sponge painting an apple
- alphabet-reading alphabet books; making alphabet shape cookies; working on handwriting with a write on/wipe off alphabet placemat; alphabet bingo; an alphabet hunt around the house; alphabet match; alphabet magnets; alphabet blocks
- animals-making a graph with animal crackers; reading animal books; animal charades
- A handwriting pages
- addition-addition magnets; addition worksheets
- autumn-collecting and counting autumn leaves & acorns

Hold off on B week until we come back. There are a lot of bacon activities that I think I would really enjoy.
Alicia--you might be up for the Mother of the Year Award in 2008 if you can make it through the letter Z at this level of amazingness.
You're in the perfect city for the letter A--afterall, it is the big APPLE.
Bryn had some letter A stuff with her preschool. I had to gather everything around the house that started with A, and ended up with surprisingly few items: apples, an apron, Ariel (the mermaid), and animal crackers. She also looked at a magazine page and tried to find all the As on the page.
I think you should go to the grocery store, look for things that start with A and put them in a basket (do they call them carriages in NYC?). Then Abandon the "A products" in an Aisle and Abscond the store, Avoiding grocers as you go.
