d-d-d-decorating

With our focus on the letter D this week, we've been decorating up a storm. We brought very few holiday decorations with us, so we've had to be creative. I also tried to make them very kid-friendly so that Sarah could help with everything, and I wouldn't have to worry about anything getting broken or ruined. I also wanted to try to do it with things that were inexpensive and that we had on hand so as to prevent us from hauling all over town in the cold weather to get items. This is what we came up with.Sarah & I decorated this gingerbread house. It was prepackaged, which, honestly, is the only way to go. She had a glorious time. At first she concentrated all of the candy in one section on the roof until I persuaded her to make sure she put a little bit everywhere. Of course, when the candy and frosting ran out, she wanted to break out the leftover Halloween candy as she felt that there was not yet enough candy on the gingerbread house. She is very concerned that we will not be able to take the gingerbread house on the plane back to Utah and has requested that Grandma Vawdrey whip up some gingerbread houses for us to do there when we arrive.
This is our cheap Christmas tree-unless you count the time it took me to cut out the handprints at my hourly rate (oh, wait, my hourly rate is currently $0)! The ornaments were $3. Again, notice the concentration of ornaments at the top (despite my best efforts to get her to put them all over the tree). Are all kids like this or just mine?
This is one of the few Christmas decorations that made the cut in the move to NYC. It was made by my amazing friend, Kristin, and I simply couldn't leave it behind. It is a work of art. Sarah loves taking off a reindeer each night in our countdown to Christmas.
This Christmas wreath is made out of Sarah's handprints. We also made the reindeer with my footprints and Sarah's handprints.
When I was a kid, my mom always did the 12 days of Christmas for us and got little treats that we didn't usually have around-like chocolate milk or our favorite sugared cereal. It was awesome. I decided this year to do the same for Sarah. Sarah helped me put the stocking garland together last night. She kept asking what it was, and I told her she'd have to wait until the morning to find out. I just got her a bunch of little things that will either fit in the sock for that day or will put a message in the sock telling her where to find items that may be a little too big to fit. We started early as to finish before we fly out on the 20th. So far, it's been a big hit! She got lip gloss this morning and has put it on 14 times already!

Rachel says "I like the handprint thing the most. The wreath is the best one."

Ethan says "I like the 12 days of Christmas stockings. My mom hides things on our tree every day and we get to take stuff out of it."

I'm going to borrow your 12 days of Christmas idea. We're still working on our numbers and I think this would be excellent motivation.

I'm so glad Sarah finally got to decorate that gingerbread house. It looks fantastic!
