I remember when these types of coats-long and puffy-were in style during my childhood. My mother had a maroon one, and I always hated it (sorry, mom). I simply didn't understand the point of having such a long coat, and honestly, the puffiness seemed quite ridiculous. Now as I walk around town, a lot (and I mean A LOT) of women are wearing them. Here in the city they seem to make sense as they are likely to keep even your legs warm on a very cold day. This is important here as it gets very cold, and you spend a significant period of your day outside if you want to go anywhere. I suppose the puffiness may be due to down or some other such substance to keep you especially warm. While I don't think I will be purchasing one this season, you may want to look into one if you want warm legs and to be in style.

Yeah, I thought they were kind of funny, too. Until I lived in NYC. And had to walk everywhere I went. A lot. My mother bought one for me- it's filled with down and I love it. Love love love it. I can wear just a t-shirt under it and still be warm. Perfect if I have to run down to the bodega on a COLD night. I'm converted. They are the best coats. EVER. Oh, and when you put the hood on, it's like you're in your own little world- it mutes the outside sounds AND keeps the wind from chilling you to the bone. BEST. COAT. EVER.
